"Hey, you look pretty bad."

Maggie looked up from her work to see McGee hovering around uncertainly. Mustering up a smile for him, she also gave him a wink and gestured to him to take a seat next to her desk.  It was quiet for a Wednesday morning and she gestured to the vase of daffodils she had received on Monday morning.

"You still haven't ( Read more... )

"You want me to get into that thing?"

Maggie's senses started to prickle and hum even as the automatic words came spilling from her mouth. "I don't know how stupid I look, but even if this phone booth is what you say it is, there's no way I'm getting in there with a strange guy I just met, no matter what your aura-- Oh, my God!"

She looked down at her hand, which had of its own volition reached out to touch the mysterious object.

"Shut the door behind you," he replied, taking a hold of the railing and hopping up to the console.

"Let's see, if I can just pinpoint the trajectory...oh yes! There it is! Somewhere on top of this building. Some sort of energy destabilizer...Maggie, has anyone been working on anything here, anything secret?"

She stepped inside slowly, looking around, her eyes widening.

"It's a living thing!" she exclaimed, joining him at the console. "This is..." she reached out to touch something that looked fairly innocuous. "Oh, my God!"

She pulled herself together long enough to ponder his question and shook her head. "There's no way anyone could be working on whatever would cause this and not go unnoticed."

"Wow..." she turned her attention back to the machine and got down on the floor, laying her ear against it. "I mean, it's a living thing! I can feel it!"

The TARDIS in the Doctor's mind barked in alarm at the sudden presence. She was expecting the Doctor home much sooner and without company.

"It's all right, old girl." He stroked the side of the machine.

He turned back to Maggie, who appeared to be laying on the floor and listening to the hum of the ship.

"There has to be something, Maggie, think!" He scratched the back of his head and sighed. "Maybe it's cloaked somehow. None of your superiors are larger blokes with a zipper on their forehead, are they?"

"Okay, let's see." Maggie typed the words into the Director's search engine and scanned the results. "You know, there was an episode of Star Trek, one of the new ones, that had an exposition scene saying that all weather on Earth in that particular future was controlled by generators, or something like that. Do you think that's what's going on. Someone actually built one and now they're testing it out, trying to get the kinks out of the system?"

She frowned at her own line of thought. "Then again, that's just television. And wouldn't something like this have gone public before they tried it out? Are they experimenting with weather over in the UK?"

"Well, it depends on who is running this organization through here. Could be anything, really. A secondary owner, an alien-leaning military organization."

Torchwood came to mind, but Jack had gone thorough and fixed that. Or so he'd said.

"Anything encrypted or hidden?"

"Hey, I'm not sure you're getting the whole NCIS thing. It's Naval Criminal Investigative Service. They're glorified Navy cops around here." Though if Gibbs caught her saying that, he'd probably whack her silly. She mused aloud as she explored some of the Director's programs. "This place is operated by the US government. I'm not saying I'd put something like this past the government, but I don't think we'll find any answers here."

"Do you really believe in aliens?"

Government could've meant Torchwood. He wondered if they had an American base. He'd have to ask Jack.

"Don't you?"
