A real test poll this time

Mar 18, 2009 17:58

Okay, following my last post it's been suggested we test it just to see if LJ's FAQs are wrong.

So here is a poll. It's set at the highest security level possible, which means only I can see who has voted and it's only open to friends.

Please vote and let me know if you can see how many votes have been cast for each whatsit.

You won't see the results for S2 because of the layout, it's quite small and with so many votes (relatively *g*) for S2, it's off the page, so to speak.

It's my favourite too.

Love your turn of phrase.

I can see the results. Is that because we're moderators?

I'm leaning away from the ticky boxes....

No, it's because although it can be screened to stop folk other than the person to set the poll (or for just friends) there is no way to stop it from showing the overall totals to everyone.

The only way you can truly hide poll results is to make it a write-in poll. Thus you would have people type in an answer (such as the title of the story or the number of the story if you assign them numbers). As it is a write in and not a tally, the only way to see the results is to click on the poll results, which only the creator can do if the security is set right.

Now, how is that different than screened comments? It puts the results right after the other as...
name: voting result
name: voting result
rather than having a million comments with user pics and extraneous information and the like. It is more visually organized.

But, it doesn't really make that much of a difference.

Hello, you :-)

Which really defeats the object. Because if you're counting 'written in' it doesn't, to my mind, matter if they are in the form of a text box or in comments.

Indeed.

The original idea was to make it easier for us and for voters, insofar as people just clicked a box and hit 'submit' and we'd just see the nice totals - but that won't work as everyone sees the nice totals.

Hello! (And, out of curiosity, are you going to respond to my responses about the spoilers? I'm not pushing or anything, but I know that sometimes LJ eats comment notifications, so I thought I'd check. If you're all spoiler-talked out and don't want to continue the discussion, I'm fine with that as well.)

Yeah, not so much easier for the readers/commenters. I always hated when icontests did voting via polls, because I always wondered if the results were skewed due to people being able to view results, but I understood that they wanted to make it as easy as possible for people to participate, so I guess it is whichever people decide is the lesser of two evils. (I wonder if LJ would ever consider making an option where the results could be screened like comments are screened. That would be very helpful!)

I personally don't have a problem with screened comments, as I think once I've spent the time to read all of the stories, what is an extra 30 seconds voting. It's not like the voting is the most time-consuming part of the process!

I am. I am. I've been bogged down with so many other things and as they aren't a two second reply, I have them flagged as 'Later' which will be (Mother permitting) today. Apologies.

That could well be the case. I personally tend to vote before I look at the results, but there are times I then see I'm the sole voter and wonder what I'd 'missed'. I also think that some people will vote purely on the character and not necessarily the icon.

I have a feeling the suggestion that poll results be hidden completely may have been made to 'LJ Suggestions', or I might just be thinking it should be made *g*

Well that is true, but you know some people . . .
