yeah Mike and I really loved Harry Potter. Now he is trying to find another series to read. He liked Lord of the Rings as well. Any suggestions? At first I thought the first series you mentioned sounded good...until you gave it a 3 :-)
my fav ya books are diane duane - they're similar to hp in that there are kids doing magic. i love anne mccaffery anything, though she usually has a female main character so mike might not enjoy that as much. i read a couple wil mccarthy books recently that i liked. then again, i'm pretty much willing to go to the scifi/fantasy section at the library and pull random books and read whatever sounds interesting. i recommend doing that. it's nice and FREE!
The Stephen King series isn't bad. I was just struggling toward the end to finish it. It got dry. And I didn't really like the ending. If you'd asked me after book 4 or 5 it might have gotten higher marks.
I recommend Raymond Feist for light reading. I like his series. (Start with Magician: Apprentice) And if he hasn't read any Salvatore, then point him towards those. I like D&D-like fantasy realms, so both of those authors are solid recommendations for that sort of thing. I could rattle off a few more when I get home if neither of those works for him. Both of those guys have 15+ books I think, but in different series. Choosing the right starting point may be difficult. :)

The main character, Dirk Pitt, runs into Clive Cussler in the strangest places, like in the middle of the Sahara.
That reminds me, I still need to see Sahara, the movie.
