So last night was the second night of Hanukkah and I have yet to light any candles. Why, you ask? Because apparently I'm the only Jew on this freaking island ( Read more... )

but... aren't birthday candles really the same thing in different packaging? that's what we always used when i was little!

I'm sure they do in a pinch, but I would think they'd generally be too small (the ones I got were a little larger than you usually see, and they still didn't fit). Plus there's that whole cheap and convenient box of 44! And really, after a certain point it became more about the principle of the thing than anything else.

well that makes sense. about the principle, i mean.

we always just used birthday candles, and i never noticed a difference in size. i dunno, maybe our menorah just had a smaller candle cup*?

*fine, what would you call it? ;)

Lord, that is funny. I never use the abbreviation "LOL," but I really was L-ing OL when I read it.

I've been in the same boat myself, hon. A few years ago I went all over town trying to find Hannukah candles on the second or third night. I think the retailers send them all back for refunds at noon on the first day or something.

Not sure about the miracle thing, though. You need more of a fearsome foe than British Columbian indifference to warrant a miracle. But it can't hurt to try. And I agree with whatisname, you can use any candles you want and it doesn' have to be in a menorah.

Well, except for Thrifty's I think it was less an issue of running out than of never having any to begin with, which is what was really burning me. The former I could chalk up as my own fault for not being more proactive.

You're probably right about the miracle, though. It was just too good not to consider once I thought of it :-).

Reminds me of the semester I spent on the Cape...I was out to dinner with some other marine bio students and we got into a conversation with our waitress about this Holocaust survivor who had come to speak to her high school...she remembered that the lady's last name was Schwartz, because, and I quote, it was such an unusual name that it stuck in my memory. Umm. Schwartz.

Anyway, happy Chanukah. I'm sorry you've had such a hell of a time finding candles :(

Yeah, I think I've been lulled into a false sense of security by the fact that there is a place around the corner from us where you can actually get fresh challah.

Happy Hanukkah to you, too! (I am really digging your Jewbacca, BTW)

Heh, we use Hannukah candles for birthdays.
And I thought Boston was too un-Jewish! :)

Only compared to New York ;-).

And apologies again for calling you back so late. I was trying to reach the stores before they closed and kept thinking the next 2-minute call would clear it all up.

I can report from New York that we seem to have an overabundance of Hanukkah candles, evidenced by the two boxes that have been sitting in my office kitchen since last week.
