N has tried to prepare for this.  He's read books on vampire lore.  Double-checked and triple-checked his logic.  Made sure that everything was right--came up with a ground plan.  This would work, right?  This had to work.   He would make it work.  Because N knew, he thought, and he knew that they both needed this.  Light was crucial to his plans for both Near and L, and in order to get him on his side, he needed to make this move.

Granted, their last parting didn't exactly... go too well, but he intended to change all that.  Turn it around.  He could use this situation to his advantage, and then he would come out on top.

Working a deceptive smile on his face, he extended his hand and delicately knocked on the door to Light Yagami's room.
