Nino bought a hat. He's told himself that it was for no particular reason but when everything else is silent and he was alone with his thoughts, he knew it wasn't true. Maybe he did it unconsciously, or maybe it was honestly his brain acting on its own, but he paid for the cap and took it home with the intention of giving it to Jun.
For first day, the bag--a simple paper bag with the name of the store stamped on it--containing the cap just sat on Nino's coffee table. Nino had no idea why he was so nervous about it. He didn't have to give it to Jun; Jun didn't need to know Nino had something for him. It was stupid wasting his time worrying about it. Nothing was achieved anyway. Nino peeked inside the bag before stuffing it in his closet.
The cap was red. It was a goofy-looking hat, and Nino thought Jun would look ridiculous in it. Yet, he felt Jun should have it anyway. More often than not, Nino didn't worry about his gifts. He gave them to people he was sure he knew, so there was no chance that the recipient could hate it. The gifts he gave weren't always for an occasion either; Nino did it sporadically. Therefore, should the receiver dislike his present, Nino can always attack their ungratefulness. And then there was Jun. Nino knew--knows--Jun. He's been with him since he was barely an adult; he's seen Jun mature while he did the same. There were so many things he knew about Jun that people wished they can even think of. But Jun was somehow apart from the rest anyway. Nino wasn't quite sure how to feel about that.
The red cap taunted him, if only his mind. Two days after he buried the bag with the cap in his closet, he's willed himself not to think about it at least a dozen times each hour. It was complete torture. When Nino came home, he threw open the closet doors, grabbed the cap and called Jun.
Jun asked what the cap was for. Nino curtly told him that it was just Valentine's, so maybe it can be for that. People usually give chocolates for Valentine's, the younger man helpfully reminded. Nino scoffed but told him that Jun would just have to give him a hat in return for White Day. The weather was somehow warm in the middle of February, but Jun grabbed the cap out of the now crumpled bad and placed it on top of his head.
Jun thanked Nino; in reply, Nino felt his cheeks grow warm as he smiled widely at him, saying that the cap looked goofy on Jun.
