No one can pinpoint the exact moment they started to drift apart. It was really a series of events that led to it. Jun might’ve said some things and Sho did as well, and it all ended in a very large gap between them. Not that they hated each other-or anything like it-it was really very far from that.

“I’m your number one fan,” a little, seventeen year old Jun announced on screen.

It was one of those rare times when Arashi had some time off-and they were spending it together. The five were in Sho’s place (because Nino’s mom was doing some cleaning; Ohno’s place was dirty; Aiba still hasn’t cleaned up the mess from the party he threw last night; and Jun just got his place cleaned). On a whim, Nino proposed to watch their first concert. Not that he was really asking for the others’ opinion.

“Ah Jun-kun, you were so tiny,” Nino said, grabbing some of the popcorn from the bowl on Aiba’s lap.

Jun, who was in the adjoining kitchen, looked up. He frowned when he saw the younger version of himself announcing his unabashed respect for Sho. At the same moment, Sho, who came from the bathroom, entered the room.

“So do you like me or love me?” a young Sho asked the tiny Jun.

Sho raised his eyebrows, eyed Jun from where he is and then took a seat beside Ohno.

“So we’re watching this one now?” he asked casually.

“I always did wonder why Sho-chan said that to MatsuJun,” Aiba thought aloud. Ohno looked at Sho while Nino looked at Aiba. Silence filled the room for a moment but was broken by the young Jun on screen as he replied to Sho’s question.

“We’re both boys so it’s different,”

“Pasta’s ready,” Jun announced right after that. Aiba and Nino broke into a playful chat about that one time during the concert when they both got lost and Ohno told Jun that hed been waiting for his pasta all night.

--

Aiba left at a quarter before midnight. Ohno left a few minutes after, saying that he’ll have to leave if he wanted to get enough rest for work tomorrow. Nino left with Ohno but not before telling Jun to cook for them again. Of course, it was logical that this arrangement left Jun with Sho.

They’ve spent time together, of course. They’ve went out for drinks. They’ve called each other. They’ve sent each other mail. It’s just that there are some times, like tonight, when things got awkward.

Memories of Jun telling Sho that he had to establish something for himself and that would men he’d leave the “I’m Sakurai Sho’s number one fanboy” image behind. That was one of the major things that sent them apart. Parting was already a given. How could Jun become himself when he’s always behind Sho’s shadow? Everything was smoothed out now. Well, almost.

Sho knew that he was one cocky kid and it bruised his ego to hear Jun-the one he was counting on to be always behind him when he looked-say that he needs to be someone else. He admits he might have said some words that were both selfish and harsh but he’s been working so hard to close that large rift between them for years. Jun was special to him, after all.

And he’d love to experience that closeness with him once again.

--

The older of the two walked Jun up to the door, unsure of what to say. Sho can write lyrics-profound, witty and smart ones-but there are times when he feels that words can never suffice to explain what he feels. To add to that was the fear of saying something to mess everything up. He had learned his lesson. Jun, on the other hand, looked like he wasn’t really expecting anything to be said. After he grabbed his coat, he turned to face Sho.

“Thanks for tonight,” Jun said, with a grim smile on his face.

At that moment, Sho willed himself to say something, as this was a chance to bridge the distance between them. Although try as he might, he couldn’t come up with something. Hell, he couldn’t come up with anything at all. Jun, who probably thought that Sho wasn’t going to say anything further, turned and placed his hand over the door knob.

“MatsuJun,” Sho called out all of the sudden. Jun turned halfway around, his eyebrows raised and a small “hmm?” escaped his lips. It was sudden-that even Sho was surprised by it-when Sho grabbed the scarf hanging near the door (it was something his sister made for him, that one period in time when she found crocheting interesting.) and quickly wrapped it around Jun’s bare neck. Jun couldn’t muster any words because of the abruptness of it all. So he lets his eyes do the asking. “Merry Christmas.”

In all honesty, Sho did not know why he said that. It was three whole days before Christmas. Three whole days. He was afraid Jun might think he was drunk or something.

But to Sho’s surprise, Jun chuckled, brought hi hand to scarf and said, “Merry Christmas, Sho-kun.”

And then he left.

It wasn’t much, what he did, and he just might be overly optimistic about this but Sho was happy to get that smile from Jun. If this was how it felt to close the space between them then Sho couldn’t wait for that space to disappear.

Besides, no matter how much work it takes, Jun’s smile was so worth it.
