~Nearly twenty years ago I started to work on a Star Trek script. Being a fairly hard core Trekker, I had a pretty good idea of what the fan base wanted, but being a moderately decent story teller and student of The Biz, I knew I needed something that appealed beyond that demo. Trek movies are expensive and the base alone would not fill enough

You should try and submit what you have anyway. Not about surpassing, not about family drama. You should put it out there and see how it's received.
