1) As far as I can tell, it's hard to give away film cameras these days.

2) What price range are you talking about? The EOS 400D is currently bottom of Canon's range, and is a very nice piece of kit (endorsed by such celebrity users as me, Tig &, er...Fox...). I can only suggest you keep your eyes open. Canon periodically do cashback offers & camera shops might be starting to get them in 2nd-hand, now that the 450D and 40D are out & people have started upgrading...

Even the 400D's predecessor, the 350D, was very good - and I expect they're pretty cheap if you can find them 2nd-hand now.

As for other makes, I believe Hep & Ian are your local friendly Nikon-users - can't remember what Rob uses.

its the big issue of wanting a nice camera without a huge price tag, especially as no doubt i'll then be shelling out for bag+lenes+1001 other bits.

I'll keep an eye out for second hand ones though, its probably the only realistic way i can get one!

We're a Canon household here, so I can't speak from experience, but I've heard some good stuff about the Nikon d40.

Oh, the D40 is specifically entry level and has a 6MP sensor which is a bit lower than some but this gives you other benefits in terms of sensitivity and should be plenty unless you really need to zoom-and-crop your images.

Mine is the d40 and I am very very happy with it. the 6megapix seems to make no odds to be honest.

although i have just noticed that the sony alphas seem to use the old minolta lenses so at least i would have a 28-50 and 50-300 lens that i could use.

If your lenses fit the Sony, then I'd say that was the one to look at. Nikon use the Sony sensors and I can't complain about my the results.
One great advantage of the Nikon is the lower price of lenses when compared with Canon and Minolta (at least, before Sony bought them out). That was one of the main reasons why I opted for Nikon over Minolta. However, if you have compatible lenses, you are off to a flying start.

Dear friends! We are watching the Great Lie from Internet! The reality is that Saakashvili FIRST bombed Tskhinvali on the Day of the Olympian Games! Georgian soldiers SHOT Russian Peace-making armies, peaceful population FIRST and only AFTER this Russian troops came to prevent further destruction. Remember Kosovo, and the US position in that case!
If you understand the reality, that means your have a free mind.
P.S. Please, send this message to all your friends. Thank you!
