Okay then, here we go.
TV Meme day 1: A show that should never have been cancelled.
Newstopia
Actually, in fairness, there are good things came about as a result of ‘Newstopia’ getting the chop. For those of us who’d been fans of Shaun Micallef’s very unusual and hilarious style of comedy, ‘Newstopia’ was a neglected gem. Being on in a bad time slot on SBS, Australia’s lowest rating free to air network, (despite having Iron Chef, Mythbusters, South Park, Inspector Rex etc. They started being a real threat with Top Gear, so Channel 9 snatched it out from under them.) Shaun’s earlier sketch comedy show, ‘The Micallef Program/Programme/Pogram(me)’ (I spelled it that way because the spelling got changed every season) was truly brilliant. ‘Welcher and Welcher’ wasn’t as good, but still enjoyable enough. Then along came ‘Newstopia’ out of nowhere. Sure we’ve seen comedy news shows before, but this was done differently, sometimes spending more time attacking cliches of news reporting, or cutting to a journalist hiding in a bunker in a war zone to report on showbiz gossip. Then cutting to the ads, which look like standard SBS promos, but are just more sketches. ‘It’s May at SBS, and that means Nazi documentaries!’ We only got two seasons and then it was gone… and for some reason it’s never been released on DVD, unlike the earlier shows.
But the upside is, if ‘Newstopia’ hadn’t been axed Shaun wouldn’t have been free to move over to Channel TEN and host ‘Talkin bout Your Generation’ which is just as funny. And that led to him finally getting recognised by the mainstream.
As a taste here’s a bit talking about inflation. There’s plenty more of his work on YouTube, so have a look round.

The Men Who Stare at Goats
Assuming the question refers only to movies released in the past year, I look over the list and realise there’s a lot I didn’t see and even less that I really liked. ‘District 9’ was good, as was ‘Moon’ had me gripped, but when it comes to a movie that caught me totally by surprise the clear winner was ‘The Men Who Stare at Goats’.
A comedy about a top secret US military project to train psychic warriors… and it’s based on a true story! Clooney showing off the charm that made him a star. Ewen McGregor is clearly having a great time, as are Jeff Bridges and Kevin Spacey. I’m not going to go on for ages about this one. Suffice to say I enjoyed this one, laughed my head off a few times and walked out of the cinema glad that I’d seen it a lot.
