So, I'll admit, I've never really pushed myself to be open to this facet of Buddhism, but that quote sounds pretty bunk to me.
I think the point is that without desire, we have nothing, where nothing is a goal rather than simply an absence. But in order for me to seek nothingness, I would have to desire it, which I don't, and I don't think many others do either.
I tend to dwell a lot on controversial or combative things I say, and have thus been thinking about my above comment a lot since posting it.
And today I realized but my goodness does this shit apply to a couple of my housemates, desire completely dominates their days and immobilizes their real progress, and to our boring ass cats that structure their days around feeding time (although I consider them prisoners so I think it's a little different). So there's that at least.
