What I find perhaps most odd about this entire episode -- the lingering death aside -- is the prevalence of death in people who I would normally class as quite capable or cautious indeed. Have we any idea what they are being killed by -- a common enemy or just a string of unlucky coincidences?

I imagine there are those here who might see this as an opportunity, and who would be inclined to act accordingly.

Of course; what villains we have naturally who lie low only out of fear of retaliation of those they've wronged. Now must seem like quite the opportunity indeed.
