Simone de Buvoir theorized that men were able to subjugate women by shrouding them in mystery--that by deliberately failing or attempting to try to understanding them, they become somehow lesser.
It's an interesting theory, and I think it explains a lot.
If you don't have to understand, you don't have to empathize.
Without empathizing, human nature is essentially doomed. The only reason you can promote tolerance and acceptance of everyone is through understanding and empathizing. The realization of a broad human nature is the only true way to live harmoniously.
