I have over $4000 in my bank account, and I'm thinking of buying a Macbook Pro. With the school discount, it'll be $1799. Plus the service plan. Plus the "free" ipod. That'll tack on a few hundred more, but I'll get a $299 refund for the ipod ( Read more... )

As long as you have time to put together enough $ for San Diego....
;o)
No, seriously. Go for it. You won't always have that student discount and it will be the primary tool of your trade as you move on in your career. I love my PC, too, but the pros use Mac for all things visually digital, and I betcha there's a good reason for that.

I second this comment. Once you're working, you won't have the cash or the discount.

I say go for it. I don't remember life before my iMac. And it'll definitely make up for itself once you start doing professional work.

Hmmm...since you're so on the fence about it, why not wait until school is over and THEN buy it? That way you'd still have it for your work, but you could wait a while so you could afford it more (or the price might go down...?). How much is it without the student discount?

Yes, I'm with Dawn. Wait until you're out of school. If you buy it now, once you enter the Real World you'll only have an out of date Mac.

And I was able to buy my Dell with a student discount just for being an alumni of one of their partner schools; does Apple work the same way? You might still be able to get the discount after you graduate.

Macbooks will be around a while and while it is nice to have a laptop for travel and such, I would prolly say stick it out until school is over then use a teacher or friend who is still in school as the discount. Last I heard, Apple doesn't check on that.

But my playful side says GO BUY IT NOW... LOL. Oh and whatever you do... definitely make sure you get the AppleCare and keep it up. It is cheaper in the long-run. I love my MacBook and there are so many powerful programs for it. I guess it completely depends on what you will need to do with it.
