Really, I'm pretty sure the only thing(s) you need to know about Stargate: Atlantis for this fic are:
0) It's a spinoff of a spinoff (Stargate: SG-1) of an old 80's movie (Stargate).
1) They're explorers from Earth (scientists and military) who traveled to another galaxy to find the lost city of Atlantis.
2) The stargate is a way to travel through wormholes between gates on different planets (or to gates in orbit around other planets). (Though they've got great honkin' spaceships as well, including the Daedalus.)
3) The U.S. Air Force is in charge of the Stargate program and it's way top secret so the general population doesn't know about it.
4) Stargate Command (the SGC) is located in the Cheyenne Mountain complex where NORAD used to be (still is? I don't know).
5) Oh, and they use a lot of acronyms.

Oh, and they found SPACE VAMPIRES in that other galaxy who are now looking to conquer Earth if they can find it, but I'm pretty sure that won't relate to the fic. Maybe.

The original Stargate flick was made around '94 or'95, you said it was an 80's flick. :D Eliot is so damn cute looking after Jesse. Plus growly making out with Shawn, so freaking hot.
