My laptop is dying, and I'm going to need a new one pretty soon. My first laptop lasted me six years, so when it finally died two years ago I took a look at the laptop market, realized that even the shittiest cheap-ass budget laptop had insanely better stats than I was used to working with, and picked the first sub-400 € model I found that ( Read more... )

HP has never let me down and I am happy with them. I recently got a Compaq/HP one (CompaqCQ58) which was cheap(ish) and seems to be fine and sturdy and fast.

Asus is another good, solid brand but recently they've become a little bit more expensive.

A good website to use if you're in Germany is notebooksbilliger.de. I bought my last 2 laptops from them and I know friends who did the same and have not been disappointed. You can even choose if you want just the hardware or the operating system to go with it. They also have a 'compare computers' option so you can make sure you look at the specs properly.

You won't get around getting Windows 8, unfortunately, but with the Win8.1 update it's not so bad. Takes a couple days to get used to, but it's better than IOS any day.

My previous laptop was an Asus, and worked for 6 or so years (but I had paid approximately 1.5K for it at the time, so... it's only cheap when you consider the cost-per-year factor.) My current laptop is a Macbook, and is starting to age and need replacing, but it's also 5 years old. Also approximately 1.5K purchase price. My husband has had a few computers that have been cheaper to buy, but all seemed to die within 1-3 years, so in the end, not much saved...

Right now, personally, I'm replacing that with a desktop (shared with the husband) and a tablet, because my personal needs are for a computer that does complicated thing, and fic-reading and email-answering from the couch, and they don't have to be the same device... and we figured that that option worked out cheaper and more convenient for both of us in the long run. It's not a solution that works for everyone, but it IS one that works for our specific needs.

Good luck!
