After reading accounts of how shock treatment affects memories, my personal headcanon is that his memories are fragmented, with few good connections between them, that he has trouble accessing them, but nothing is truly lost. It also helps with writing fic about it. Complete wipes aren't actually possible, was what was shown by horrible experiments on mentally ill patients in the mid-century.
