I wish I understood more about computers....

So the latest thing to happen is that I can't unzip any files without crashing the unzipping program. It's such a weird coincidence that this is the process (the unzipping) that also causes WoW to crash constantly. What would make a computer be unable to unzip files? I tried playing with the user controls so it wouldn't try to stop it. I ( Read more... )

So, it's the unzip software that's crashing?

And it's Vista?

I hated Vista with fiery burning passion, but I wonder if something like this:

seems relevant? It's having to do with AVG trying to scan the unzipping program.

If that's not it (or it's a different program/OS), I'd google something like unzip crash program-name vista/xp/win7 (e.g., unzip crash winrar vista) or something and find a forum where someone else has had the same problem. Which won't so much help tonight, I know.

That makes a lot of sense, actually. I had issues with AVG not too long ago as it was changing the format of all the files I was downloading into something I couldn't work with (the problem came to light with self-extracting files from Big Fish Games). Good call, I'll play around with it when I have a chance.

Yeah, it sounds a bit like an antivirus issue to me too. I don't suggest you run without antivirus, but you might turn it off for short time and attempt to unzip the file. If it works, you then have a path to investigate for WoW too - maybe upgrading or using a different antivirus.

*nods* That makes a lot of sense. Do you have any recommendations for other anti-viruses? I basically use AVG because the tech at work uses it, and because it's free. I had Panda before and it was great the first year, but gave me nothing but trouble afterwards.

I ended up switching to Avira recently. It hasn't caused me any problems, from what I can tell. It does have a pop-up nag you every so often to upgrade; that's a bit of a pain.
