Don't you love the feeling of having the upper hand in a negotiation? Below is an example of exactly what I'm talking about.
Cathy,
Just a quick summary of my statements in our conversation earlier and a spreadsheet showing how I came to the conclusion on my travel numbers.
My standard rate depending on the project length, complexity and location varies between 105 and 120 per hour plus expenses. If a client wishes to include expenses in the rate then I perform a conservative and fair estimate of how much additional the rate would be. I followed GSA guidelines for Hotel rates and Per Diem for one week. I calculated in the cheapest round trip, peak season flight. I got the price of the most inexpensive intermediate rental car and add in a tank of gas at current prices. As you can see no “fluff” or additional profit is added into the travel uplift.
If ********* is willing to enter into a one year agreement with me I will gladly give them my lowest standard rate (despite the much higher cost of living on the West Coast) plus the added uplift to cover expenses.
The low end rate comes out to $105 per hour plus 34.58 for expenses for a round total of 140/hour for an inclusive rate. I will gladly go corp to corp with your firm so you will not have to pay W-2 related taxes for me thus increasing your margin. Please keep in mind the above rate is on the low side for a senior consultant / team lead position especially in a difficult area like Solution testing and validation and FDA's CFR 21 / Sarbanes Oxley compliance. I usually find comperable positions being filled at 160 / hour inclusive and up depending on the industry of the client and difficulty of the assignment.
Ideally I'd be happy continuing on making my current rate of 120 an hour plus expenses (if it would help in negotiations I'd gladly supply you with a copy of my current contract to prove the rate).
Thanks,
Gabe
Today is another good day.
Much Love,
Ski
