Their Game
Ouran Host Club
Hikaru / Kaoru
PG 13
twincest (of the "little devil" variety)

Breath that ghosted over skin, lips that never quite touched.

It was their own personal game. A challenge. Who would break, bend under the sacred line they never cross? Blush and pull away, give the silent acquiesce.

Hikaru won. Always.

Because, no matter what, no matter how much Kaoru loved his twin (because how much Kaoru loved his twin), no matter how right it felt when Hikaru drew him close and pulled him in (because of how right it felt), there was something dark in the pit of his stomach trying to pull him in deeper, and Kaoru was scared. Scared that he might drown, and scared that he might like it.

Over time, it evolves. The stakes become a little greater, the space between them a little smaller, and it’s not about the club anymore (Kaoru wonders if it ever was).

The feeling in his stomach becomes stronger, takes form, partly something not-quite-fear, partly something not-quite-anxiety, mostly something Kaoru doesn’t want to think about for too long.

And one day Hikaru corners him, wearing that smug self-confident grin that Kaoru used to. He leans in, laughter in his smile, and in a voice that isn’t really a whisper, “Come on, Kaoru, don’t be jealous.”

It’s one of their acts, just like any other.

Kaoru blushes, like they planned, and glances away. “But Hikaru...” He says in a voice that isn’t quite a pout.

Hikaru leans in, gets closer, lets his breath play across Kaoru’s flushed cheeks.

It’s one of their games, just like any other.

Only this time.

Hikaru doesn’t win.

This time, Kaoru leans in, and their lips meet (crash), and they both get dragged under. And if both of them drown, it suddenly doesn’t matter, because any other ending just wouldn’t feel right.

(And it definitely was never about the club.)
