Miscellany of my Summer Thus Far

Last weekend, I got babysit my two great nieces - unexpectedly, which was stressful at first (mostly because of a 3 hour round trip drive to pick them up and drop them off, because my niece doesn't have a car). But it was totally worth it in the end just to have some time with the two of them. They really are sweet kids ( Read more... )

Okay this may be a very silly idea and/or silly question - but - one, I have never myself tried to write to try to publish anything small/big or other wise for writing. Now, you did ask as for science-fiction/fantasy contests and magazines. And I know nothing on these either, but if you do read these yourself, do they have contests in them or a 'do you have a story'? sort of thing? I mean of course I can understand if you have to pay to have them put it in, you don't want to have to do that.

The only stuff I do know (or did at one time) was Jedi Council Forums - though I did use it for fanfiction, I believe they had other stuff besides that, I don't know if they had anything related to what you want, but they may tat least know of contests maybe. The actual main site is called TheForce.net and I did see a link t a magazine, though it is for an order for it called Star Wars Insider (this was back in May)

I am sorry I was not much help.

Not a silly question at all. :) I'm new to the hunt for a place to publish, myself, since most of what I've "published" has been fanfiction, online, for free.

I haven't actually subscribed to too many magazines... But a lot of magazines (online or print) will have contests where they invite entries for a certain genre or theme (with the prize usually including publication in some form), or you can just submit your stories to be printed in the magazine as a regular article (depending the submission rules/whether or not they're open to entries).

The trick is finding legitimate contests, and magazines that fit the genre you write for (especially tricky with sci-fi and fantasy). Sometimes they have entry fees, which, while not always an indicator of a scam, is usually a pretty good indicator that something's fishy (at least from what I've heard).

Aw, I have such fond memories of the Jedi Council Forums. After LOTR, I believe the Jedi Apprentice series was one of the first "fandoms" I got involved in. I'll have to revisit that place. :

Ooh, have a lovely time at your annual "unplugged" vacation! And good luck with writing a short story. I have no clue where would be a good place to submit, though I'm sure there's plenty of legit venues out there. I know Writer's Digest used to have a list of contests for that sort of thing... maybe you can get hold of a copy to see if they still do? Most libraries subscribe to that magazine. Their website might even have something.

Thanks! It's always a great time to relax for all of us.

The Writer's Digest does look like a good place to potentially find some legitimate venues. (Ooo... I glanced at their site, and discovered this list. And they've got some articles on selling short stories, too. Awesome sauce!)
