On Snide Reviews

Aug 13, 2013 09:08

Dear Reviewer,

If you find the MAJORITY of the protagonists in a fandom to be "annoying, abrasive, and in-your-face," then WHY are you reading fanfiction (AU fanfiction, for that matter), and - moreover - actually taking the time to leave a snide review about how you just don't like any of them?

I mean, really. WHYYY?

Love,
Disgruntled and

whyyy, fandom

No kidding! Wow, what a stupid thing to say in a review. I guess some people just like to troll. Meh. (What fandom, may I ask?)

It was for NCIS - which I haven't been active in for a while, and I'm increasingly annoyed at what little I do see from the "fans." A lot of general character bashing and entitlement going on there. Not like home sweet LOTR. <3

(Also, this review was on FFN. Biiig surprise. ^^)

FFN does have its trolls, that's for sure. I'd love to send Aragorn after 'em!

I've never seen NCIS, but I'm sorry that the fans there aren't very nice. LOTR has its own set of not-so-nice folks, but on the whole people are polite, and you can usually find a friendly corner somewhere, thank goodness!

People are... weird. Seriously weird. My current fandom has a variation of what you described, in that it's not so much all encompassing character hate as someone going into a story to defend their precious favorite character and all their actions - usually by criticizing the other characters - and always in a story that is not about the favorite precious character (for example, it would be like someone going into a Neal-centric story in order to defend Peter and criticizing Neal in the process. You know, instead of going to read a Peter-centric story by an author who likes Peter. Because apparently trolling is more satisfying? *shrugs*).

Also, your icon is epic :D

It IS so very, very weird... I can understand being upset about the direction of a show or the characters (I've been that fan), but usually I eventually just give up if nothing changes. I don't go around reading fanfiction about characters I can't stand, and then leave reviews, to boot. I'll admit, I'm sensitive. But I'm also just GAH about the mentality of this reviewer towards the characters of the show she's reading fic for. XD

See also: If you hate the writer of the show, why are you in the fandom?

(And Steven Moffat CREATED Sherlock, so you can't pull the Doctor Who card there . . . )

EXACTLY.

Only, most of the encounters I've had with fans in this particular fandom have absolute TIZZIES OF OUTRAGE if you suggest they actually hate the show/it's writers simply because they happen to ACT like they do, in fact, hate the show and its writers. *le sigh*
