The Last Dragonlord
On the 2 hour busride from Ho Chi Minh City to Mekong City so I thought I'd make use of my time typing up all this pent up squeeage over MERRRRRRLIN.
OH SHOW, WHY DO YOU KEEP BREAKING MY HEART WEEK AFTER WEEK AFTER WEEK?
I'm gonna try to keep the caps to a minimum but it's gonna be SO HARD as there are so much to screech about!!!
SO MUCH ARTHUR/MERLIN LOVE!!!!! Right from the VERY BEGINNING. Again, the whole thing about how Arthur always has to have Merlin by his side, not only on his forest treks, or battlefield, but EVEN WHEN HE'S UP ON THE CASTLE WALLS LEADING THE KNIGHTS IN DEFENSE OF THE DRAGON'S ATTACK, Merlin is there by his side. Flails ♡
Poor Merlin, he's SO guilt-ridden almost the entire episode. Colin Morgan! Stop giving me that heartbreaking face! Oh, the boy is SO GOOD. I keep shedding tears for him :(
And as much as I love it when Arthur gets wounded (coz it means he'll take his shirt off), it comes with dire consequences over my mental health. A/G scenes always come along, and as potentially sweet and cute the Arthur-puts-Gwen's-hand-over-his-chest scene is, I cringed. If it were any other couple, like for instance, SOOKIE & ERIC, I'd flail and faint. Why again? I'm still not warming up to A/G yet. The premises were set up too prematurely, I feel there still wasn't enough REASON for Arthur to fall so badly for Guinevere ALREADY, you know? It's not believable enough for me that Arthur is already committing his heart to Gwen. IT'S TOO EARLY. Sure it's OK for him to start having feelings for Guinevere, but he needs to romp around first in order to realize that YES, HE LOVES GWEN.
Back to Arthur/Merlin squeeage.
My heart skipped a beat watching all the Arthur scenes too. OH MY GORGEOUS BLONDLINESS ROYAL PRINCE, YOU DO ME SO PROUD. SO BRAVE, SO REGAL, SO COURAGEOUS. I wouldn't even think twice to follow Arthur INTO THE JAWS OF DEATH (as dingogrrl puts it). If I was a Knight of Camelot, I'll follow him EVERYWHERE. INTO THE FIERY PIT, INTO THE DEPTHS OF HELL. ARTHUR PENDRAGON, I WILL SERVE YOU TIL DEATH DO WE PART. I have a soft spot for heroes and princes. So, a heroic prince? My heart explodes.
Arthur volunteers to go find Balinor alone, and he STOOD UP TO UTHER. Flails again. All this time everytime Uther forbade him to go, he would obey and then jump off the window. This time, he BLATANTLY DISAGREES, DISOBEYS, and insisted that he's still going to go. ALONE. Alone = WITH MERLIN. And that's cue for more Arthur/Merlin treks out into the deep dark forest together. MY FAVORITE PARTS IN ALL MERLIN EPISODES. OHH ♡
Love the slumber party pillowtalk in the inn. Breaks my heart though. I love that Arthur NOTICED that something is bothering Merlin, and he OPENS UP himself for Merlin to tell him. AND IT BREAKS MY HEART THAT MERLIN COULDN'T CONFIDE IN HIM. That scene broke my heaaaaaaart :'( The whole hypothetical "if I wasn't a Prince, we'd totally get along" is BIG HINT there that YES, ARTHUR DOES LOVE MERLIN. MERLIN IS NOT JUST A MANSERVANT TO HIM. But sadly Arthur Pendragon is STILL Prince Arthur Pendragon. He's bound to his title and his obligation to the people of Camelot to uphold the laws of his father, as long as Uther is still king. I guess I understand why Merlin still decided not to tell Arthur anything. I'm sure he's DYING TO TELL ARTHUR, but he cares about Arthur way too much to put him in SUCH A DIFFICULT POSITION. No, he can't do that to Arthur.
And Arthur admits that HE ENJOYS MERLIN'S SURLY RETORTS. SQUEEEEEEE. Seeee I told you, this is why Arthur drags Merlin EVERYWHERE. Like EEEEVERYWHERE!!!! Because he needs Merlin to entertain him!!!
Merlin & Balinor. OH MY HEART. I keep wanting to squeeze Merlin for being so cute! He's like this bouncy little boy who wants to blurt out a secret but knows he can't, and he keeps trying to fish the information to Balinor, and failing miserably coz Balinor is just... grumpy & dense xD so he has to lay it out to him LITERALLY: "I'M YOUR SON."
Wow. Hugeness. I can't believe Merlin's father is A DRAGONLORD. And what's even MORE HUGE? Merlin IS NOW the last dragonlord!!! I did not see that coming! Oh Arthur, if you only KNEW how awesomely special your little Merlin is, YOU'D BE SOSOSOSOSOOO PROUD OF HIM (secretly, of course. On the outside, he'd be like whaaaaat? You? A dragonlord? Pffft. XD)
Merlin getting a small moment of happily ever after is always cue for TEARS SOONAFTER. Sniff. Why do they always do this to him? Give him happy and then rip it right out of him few seconds later? POOR MERLIN. OH POOR POOR MERLIN.
And Arthur totally noticed his pain! IF ONLY YOU KNEW, ARTHUR! :'( I love that scene where Merlin helps Arthur into his armor, and Arthur gave him that little peptalk about how "No man is worth your tears." OBVIOUSLY Arthur thinks so much more of Merlin otherwise he wouldn't have said those things that he usually only tells HIS KNIGHTS. Love the humorous warm banter between Arthur & Merlin, even in the darkest moments. ARTHUR & MERLIN IS LOVE.
MERLIN DOING HIS DRAGONLORD STUFF. HOT HOT HOT. OMG. Merlin's puppy adorable image in my eyes CHANGED INSTANTLY. DRAGONLORD. HOLY. SO HUGE. And of course, that Arthur is always OUT COLD when something huge is going on. Always clueless. Like dingogrrl said, Arthur is exactly like LEX LUTHOR in Smallville. Always knocked out cold and misses all the awesome Clark Kent action.
And so our heroic duo returns from peril, ALIVE. Btw, what happened to the other knights? Did they really get BBQ'ed? :O The whole welcoming home scene really irks me because they did a Gaius hugs Merlin & Gwen hugs Arthur. I'd much rather they all do a group hug. And isn't it rather SELFISH of Gwen to display her affections towards Arthur so PUBLICLY? And yeah, the absence of her concern towards OTHER PEOPLE LIKE MORGANA & MERLIN bugs the hell out of me. Writers, you need to do Gwen better, seriously. I already dislike her, don't make me dislike her even more :(
MERLIN WILL RETURN.
Those last words at the end of the episode is just PLAIN CRUEL.
