Over the past few years I've become more and more reluctant to draw human faces unless they are stylized in some way - anime, Don Martin, etc. However, I'm working on a project now that requires illustrations, and avoiding the ones that involve humans feels like chickening out ( Read more... )

Hey, those are really nice faces! They have a very 'old fashioned' look to them, which fits the Oz/storybook style very well!
I love drawing with ball-point pen, by the way.

Thanks! I like ballpoint pens because they force me to loosen up and get sketchy. I often try to overcontrol when drawing.

Lovely studies!! :) Did you do much 'underdrawing' first to establish structures or just copy the finished lines?

Thankee! I definitely did the underdrawing; if I just tried to copy the lines they would have come out lopsided and alien. Circle for skull, hang the jaw off that, cross to indicate eye level and face midline, two smaller lines to indicate mouth and nose level, sketch the hairline and basic haie shape, then start going for the details.

The medusa-ish profile was the hardest one to draw because I couldn't do the whole head. There wasn't a whole head for me to copy!
