Bad Ideas 1: Silent Oz by ~Negaduck9 on deviantART

I recently read an interview with Todd McFarlane, who is working on an Oz movie. Here are two excerpts from that interview:
"I always hated Oz’ said Todd McFarlane, the new Wizard of Oz remake director ‘Oz is like DeMilles’ Ten Commandments of the musicals, I prefer a trip to the dentist… I think ( Read more... )

Too many times, I've seen people who take an idea they, in most cases, absolutely hate and twist it around until it's nearly unrecognisable and/or plain out disgusting. Either because they feel like it'd be "better" that way, or more or less to take the piss out of it. (Bonus points if they actually created the initial subject in question.) It makes me sick. I'm all for artistic liberties, but when it gets outright distasteful, I can't help but grumble about it.

Looking over the figures and story he's done there, I grumbled a lot. Excuse me while I make a gothic psychological horror film version of Dora the Explorer.

Yep. McFarlane seems determined to take a dump on Oz. I hope that this movie of his won't make it to the screen because investors and studios realized that grudge matches don't make for good movies.

Not too surprising, I guess. Todd took Spider-Man and attempted (and failed, really) to turn him into this dark, brooding reservoir of angst and despair. His "Spawn" series was better (still not too my tastes, though) as he had his own creations to work with.

I'm reminded of something that Mark Lungo once wrote in our old APA days (paraphrased): If you want to change something so much that it's not recognizable anymore, why not just make something original in the first place?

I also have to wonder if that was Todd's pitch to the execs who greenlighted this project: "I always hated Oz."

Sounds like the perfect man to make the film!

Oh, there was a story to go along with the figures: Dorothy bought a S&M corset that btought her to Oz somehow. she met the other three. The Wizard turned everyone into vile monsters except for Dorothy, who became a bondage slut. The end. Wow - now I understand everything!

McFarlane does have his niche. He does good monsters. The problem is, there are places where nasty monstrosities just aren't appropriate.

By the way, every time I go to a com with my name prominently displayed on my tag, some fool asks me if I'm related to him. My response is always to ask them if they can spell his last name.
