i think once you get to a group of five there is a definite division. I just see no way that you can like all 4 people the same amount, there has to be at least a slight fluctuation. I do think it's a girl thing to want to have a "best" but I wouldn't say it's innate. Perhaps more programmed into feminine heads over time. Or maybe guys are just less obvious about having a best friend. I do find that females upon losing a "best friend" have a strong desire to substitute them with someone else. I guess having that sort of closeness with one person is really desirable.

I definitely think guys do not have the same problem. their relationships with each other seem much more easygoing while women's are more emotional. If you put a group of 10 guys together I think they would mostly get along fine while the same couldn't be said for women.

As for the hierarchy, I think it depends if all four of them refer to all of them as their "best friends," then it's just one big group of good friends. But if they only refer to Carrie in that way it's kind of weird and it makes it seem like she's in control of the group. I've never watched the show so idk.
