Man oh man...

Today was quite a day. On the hard front, there was some relational conflict that came up today that is going to take quite a bit of undoing. *sigh* I wish it was easy to assign blame in this, but the reality is that it's just hard and somehow we have to get through it and find peace and unity on the other side. These are the times when I am ( Read more... )

Ramon, I'm not surprised that you led a great discussion. You've certainly developed that skill of leading with questions..(You'll have to give me some credit since your 'preaching' out on me this weekend probably put you in the right place for a discussion =P.. you know I'm just hassling you.. =)) I AM surprised at the atttitude towards learning these Reedites have - Staying in class and starting a relevant discussion.. I thought the standard response was count down 15minutes and run! Especially as undergrads.. As a grad student I recently found that I've developed an aversion to people who declare they "hate learning"... in whatever degree of jest.. But I'm sure many more would agree - especially when stated by a middle-aged manager of sorts.. Enjoy! - JJ. P.S. You know.. I contacted this pastor regarding church and he hasn't bothered replying.. e-mailed another and he said "Buddy.. I've been wondering about you..I'm on it.." Initially I thought.. I'd give Pastor1 a clear shot before I contacted Pastor2.. then I thought.. nahh ( ... )

While I don't know much about Reed outside of Ramon's & Donald Miller's perceptions of it...I ahve to agree with you on the annoyance with other students disregard to learning...especially in grad school.
I'm getting my masters in counseling currently and am sometimes overwhelmed by the negative and intolerant attitudes of people studying for a "tolerant and helping " profession. Especially when all people can think of is just getting through with the program. Grad students skipping classes or rolling their eyes at the professor who challenges their thinking. Its irritating. You're paying money to learn higher education...yet they think and act like they have nothing to learn.
End of rant.

A very astute rant, Jenna. I myself was guilty of such an attitude in undergrad, I'm afraid. One of the reasons I only have six credits left to graduate is that my increasing apathy toward the educational process in the end became total inaction and I did not complete the work required to "get by".

I hate that I put myself in that position, but it feels almost like if I graduate I will have truly gained what the ideal university education is supposed to provide: an understanding of the importance of the development of the mind regardless of material gain.

Having said that, I'd like to finish my degree so I can do graduate work with this new "englightened" motivation. I still hate papers though...

I agree with you...there is a crazy mindlessness that comes in with a lot of undergraduate stuff...like the prerequisites that may have nothing to do with what you want to do...

however, at some point, especially in some higher education...where it is your choice. no one is forcing you to. You are encouraged in some ways to think outsie of the box(whereas I saw in undergrad you had to thinkt he way they wanted you to)

anyway. I hate some of teh work invovled too. That is why I am loving the practicum experience now...lots of hands on work. thats where you really work anyway.

Good to hear that you are beginning to develop that feeling of belonging where you are.
Good Luck in that relational conflict.

Yay. Leading a good class discussion is absolutely the most invigorating part of teaching. And they love you. Yay.

Ramón,
That is exciting to hear bro! The way you interact with people and carry yourself makes it easy for people to respect you and it honors our master. I love you my friend
