Has anyone else heard that St. Valentine's Day was instituted to rival another pagan holiday called Lupercal or something, where people dressed up in skins and splattered blood on the people they were attracted to? I think I got that jumbled in the transmission, but does any of this ring a bell with anyone?

Well according to an article I found through google, this story is correct and Valentine's day was instituted by some pope. The original pagan holiday was rather.. uhmm... immoral? History channel has the story about the pope and the martyred St. Valentine, but nothing about Lupercal for the god Lupercus. - JJ =).
