P.P.S. Liivi, I think dismissing an entire genre of music based on one half-decent ("Half of it is pleasant, competent pop music") record from a band most people have never heard of is stretching things. Despite my rock and roll leanings, I think the Canadian "orchestral pop" movement (although classifying bands like the dramatic Dears and mediocre Metric under one banner is a huuuuge stretch, it's basically done because they're both Canadian)is one of the most exciting musical explosions in a long time. Unlike most indie music made today, which is tuneless and badly performed, these "orchestral pop" bands have definite vision in their songwriting and good players. Take for example Stars' Evan Cranley, who carries the entire record with his elastic, bass countermelodies. I also like the spirit of community and friendship that these groups embody and while some of the bands might not turn me on musically, I think the aesthetic they represent is very appealing in today's uncertain pop music climate.

Metric live is great, but yeah their albums are kind of mediocre. I'm thinking about seeing stars June 29 in London if only to see Amy Millan again. She's cute.

Marco, I genuinely respect your opinion, though before discussing this further, I plan to retreat into the saloon with a cigar and watch Scarface for the third time this week. When I return, it'll be with a comeback.
