I think that there's a fairly strong anti-intellectual tendency in British culture which just isn't present to any real degree in France. It's ok-ish to be cultured in Britain provided you don't flaunt it outside circles who are prepared to be tolerant of that sort of thing, but active intellectualism is frowned up.

Agreed, but my point was, is the language issue a cause of this?
