Why you shouldn't leave your comics in a garage for 4 years

The casualty list so far is a bunch of Sandman GNs - Preludes & Nocturnes, Dolls House, Dream Country, Season of Mists, A Gasme of You and Fables & Reflections. I've also lost the Sandman/ Sandman Mystery Theatre crodd-over GN, a Ted McKeever limted series Industrial Gothic, and issues 5-8 of a Garth Ennis/ Phil Winslade limited series called ( Read more... )

Lucky you! I lost about four long boxes of single issues when the basement of my olds house got flooded with sewage! I lost A to D - so all my Batmans and Daredevils, and half of S - all my spidermans and Stray Bullets. I was really upset about the Stray Bullets as the first five issues of those babies were signed by David Lapham. In fact, I think I've just re-opened the wound. Gonna go and have a cry now. Neil - I feel you pain.

Alas, I'm still new to the comic book world (well, 3 years now) so I only have a long box and half to worry about (and organise at some point) but I still share the pain - I cringe when I see a bent corner or water damaged page, so I can only imagine what it must feel like to lose so many at once!

I feel a Professor Farnstrom quote is vaguely applicable here:

'1,000,000 robot (but for our purposes comicbook) life are about to be wiped out; Oh the Jedi's are going to feel this one!'

I'm currently observing a minutes' silence.

I was thinking of lending a mate one of my sandmans, I got so worried I imagined myself telling him to respect the comic and do not bend and dont fold the cover back when reading it, I gave up, I'll just tell him about it...

Oh no!!! Sorry man. That really sucks. I'm in the same boat as Tom, I've only got one long box to panic about (but from what I've bought over here it may be oveflowing by the time we get back to oz).

Now I'm worried about all my babies back home! I think I'll go call my dad....

in the same box was the rest of my singles: Brief Lives and onwards as singles, and they seem unscathed. At least GNs are replacable.

It's mad how, for something supposedly collectable, old comics are so fragile - the paper eats itself up, the binding isn't up to much. From this point of view, things have certainly got better these days.

My brother managed to set fire to my parents house years ago and smoke damaged my entire collection. Luckily they were all bagged up and thus protected. Mylar bags. You gotta love them.
