Quick answer: the math always results in a multiple of 9. Every multiple of nine shares the same symbol, which changes when you hit "try again" to avoid arousing suspicion.

Heh. I just knew that it was a math trick. I had to use Google to find the answer. Not smart so much as "resourceful". :)
