So, I have a better delivery estimate for my Leaf: the week of June 15th. It seems so weird to be getting a new car. I still need to figure out exactly what I'm going to do with the old one - sell it to a friend or donate to charity. Donate to charity is an easy default, but i want to check to make sure I don't know of anyone who wants/needs it ( Read more... )

Yay, glad that you're getting a new car. :)

Congrats on the new car. I'll be interested to hear what you think of it.

What kind of car are you getting rid of? Our '88 Honda still runs but has developed lots of "personality" so we were thinking of replacing it at some point.

The old car is a 1994 Geo Prizm; I've had it since it was brand new. It's still in good shape - low mileage for its age (just getting to 101K) since I carpooled with Earl for quite some time. Tires replaced within the last year; new electrical system and new ignition control module, no thanks to some fragging rats. It's currently getting around 27-28 mpg city, which (to me) is a sad drop from the 29 when it was new, but so it goes. No idea what the current freeway mpg is, since i do my commute all on city streets, but i'd guess it's dropped to 29-30. I've thought about converting it to biodeisel or electric, but i'm too damned lazy.

I have some friends in Mountain View who i've sorta given "first dibs" to; I need to poke them. =)

You can't run biodiesel unless the car was diesel to begin with, which I'm pretty sure the Pirzm isn't. Might be a good choice for an electric conversion, since it's small and (presumably) lightweight. But as you say, it would be a lot of work.

Anyway, if I were to drive a car like that, I'd probably need one for each foot :).

#laughs# Well, i know it's easiest to convert a diesel car to biodiesel, but if you can rip out the engine and replace it with a battery pack, you could also rip it out to replace it with a diesel engine, right?

#crickets#

And actually, it's a decent sized car, even with the name "Geo" on it; it's the twin sister of that year's Toyota Corolla. That doesn't necessarily mean that it'd be big enough for you, but it's not a Geo Metro (aka "golf cart"). It worked on a roadtrip with Glenn Eychaner and Dave Flowers and me. =)
