For taking pictures close-up like that, you need two things -- a decent wide-angle lens and a sensible macro mode.

With my usual impeccable timing, I bought a new camera just before I found out I'd be losing my job, but it does have both these features. 'Tis the Panasonic Lumix TZ4 and, while its image quality isn't the best in the class, it's pretty decent and also offers a very powerful 10x optical zoom in a body not much bigger than a normal compact. The combination means that, if you don't play around with manual settings (which this camera doesn't have) very much, it's a goody.

Word of caution: don't bother with the 'upgrade' model, the TZ5; it has a nicer screen and higher megapixellage, but the images it produces is actually worse than its predecessor.

HTH!

Thanks, Pauly! I'll definitely put it on my list of cameras to check out!
