Last year's balcony garden was surprisingly successful. Especially the basil, which sprouted up like mad and made for many wonderful tomato sauces and pesto blends last year. So once again LJ has become my place to blather and plan

Oh, wow, that tomato thing is kind of cool! Where did you come by it?
I have a pic or two of my new color on flickr (but didn't really feel like putting it on LJ, 'cause like... HEY EVR1 LOOK AT MY HEAD! posts feel weird). I mostly just put 'em up because Dan had to sleep at work last night and didn't get to see it in person that day.
I'm going to start a garden this year! I'm doing spinach and basil too, plus lots of tomatoes. Maybe some peppers? I need to plan more seriously and figure out how much of what will fit. The yard is small but probably bigger than your balcony. I really really want lots of delicious tomatoes.
My seed store carries a variety of spinach, a hybrid, that supposedly doesn't go to seed very quickly in the heat. I'm going to try that.
WHEE! Garden! Let me know how it goes; I'm still pretty new at it, so any experience you gain would probably be educational for me. ^_^ Does your yard get full sun or is a lot of it shaded by trees?
It's shaded by fences and other houses, but in the summer it gets full sun from mid-morning to mid-afternoon or so, depending on which part of the backyard we're talking about. Joe and I have been toying with the idea of planting in a big awkward strip right down the sunny middle of the yard, but we'll probably plant along the fence anyway, where there's a mix of sun and shade.
Oh yes, we are also planting raspberries! And there are two cherry trees we got as wedding presents, but they currently don't really give any shade (or cherries).
Oh yes, and I have had great success growing chives in a pot on a windowsill. I don't use it much, either, but I've been forgetting about it less lately and it looks so pretty on home fries or a salad. (The flavor is surprisingly mild, though.)
