Collecting weird shit since... forever.

Every so often, I come across an object and think, "OH GOD, I WANT THAT." It's never something simple or practical, like shoes or a nice cookpot. Usually it's a horrible sort of thing where, were I to buy it, I would immediately realize it had no business being in my home. Half the time, it isn't even something real. Some of my I WANT THATs ( Read more... )

Man, pretty much everything I buy is on impulse - except for video games, which I generally research beforehand. I often wind up with a bit of buyer's remorse, too. A few years ago I collected a lot of figures that I no longer have any room for and no longer care about. I think the weirdest thing I've impulse-purchased is my 1980's Ukranian military surplus ushanka - no buyer's remorse there, though.

The most remorse I tend to have is actually when I DON'T buy things, especially when I purchase part of, but not all of, a set. Then I wind up with a few neat things that serve mainly to remind me that I am missing others. Examples: various manga series and Di Gi Charat plushies (someday I'll find that Piyoko again...)

Anime + me = impulse buying usually. Though otherwise I can usually control the urge. (Though my collection of stilled wrapped games and dvds on my dresser would say otherwise)

Oh man. I totally have some shrink wrapped DVDs that fill me with shame. XD Why did I buy if I was not going to watch?!

I am usually this careful, prudent shopper, but I have an impulse-buying streak that manifests itself whenever there's a need to make a quick decision, like at a yard sale or a little market we're passing exactly once on vacation or a random street in Seattle where there's a guy playing a hammer dulcimer and selling his own CDs!

Joe finds it strange because he apparently has nothing of this sort in his nature, and I'm not usually the kind of person who HAS to buy a hammer dulcimer CD, but sometimes I am. And now I have it, which I actually do regret a bit, since the stuff the guy was playing wasn't as weird and atonal as the stuff on the CD. Darn.

Having just come back from the Small Press Expo, I have realized that I am infinitely more susceptible to impulse buys when the creator is standing there looking at me. I spend more than I mean to when at craft fairs, farmer's markets, etc. I would probably have purchased a hammer dulcimer CD from that dude if I'd made eye contact with him.
