September is a beginning and an end all at once

The breezes taste
Of apple peel.
The air is full
Of smells to feel-
Ripe fruit, old footballs,
Burning brush,
New books, erasers,
Chalk, and such.
The bee, his hive,
Well-honeyed hum,
And Mother cuts
Chrysanthemums.
Like plates washed clean
With suds, the days

I'm with you on the apple orchards (the academia part I still am a part of, and usually am trying to run away from...). I was just thinking it's getting close to apple-picking weather (and perhaps cider-donut ingesting weather too)! As for the May/Sept conundrum, September has always been my favorite month, and fall in general (before going back to academia, I too always had a hankering for school). May's not bad (as a gardener, I love watching what emerges from the ground), but mud season/black flies give it slight demerits. :)
