if the actor can't play the violin theres not much you can do. I suspect dubbed violin playing looks ridiculous

But it would be easy to have violin playing stand-in hands and do some careful editing.

Nah, that always looks a bit stupid. And it seemed that a lot of the thinking scenes seemed to rely on his his facail expressions. Also with Violin it is held quite close to the face and body so it would be really, really obvious that it's not him. In fact i think the only instrument that techique really works for is the piano.

Well they could show him the right moves, get him to do it slowly then later speed it up and dub the music. That might make it look less silly.

the main thing that got to me about the Irene Adler thing was that she was such a boring character and they had no sexual chemistry. what's the point of going to all the effort of inserting a non-canon love interest and all when she's just a waste of space?

True. At least Watson's love interest was done well and their chemistry was good.
