The floors are cool. Many things are cool. There is an above-ground cistern in the basement; it's not currently in use, but it's very cool.

I have no idea what that is.

A cistern is a tank or tub for holding water. In this case, it's a stone/concrete "tub" or "pool" about 5 feet deep, 4 feet wide, and 6 feet long in our basement. It is not a hole in the floor, but built on it, so there's a five foot wall around it. If we use it, we'd probably put up some gutters and fill it with rain water, and then use a solar powered pump to pump the water out and use it to irrigate the garden. Not strictly necessary, since we're on a well and don't pay for our water, but might save some wear and tear on the well.

I know. I very happy. I'm thinking black walnuts = squirrels, which will mean no longer having to walk out with Pippi - she'll be more than happy to go out and squirrel hunt in her own private preserve.

I'm impressed (and a bit jealous) at how well things have panned out for you. Congratulations.

People keep saying stuff like this, and it makes me feel a bit funny. On one hand, I've got no control over luck, and we have been lucky. On the other hand, we try to play smart. A bit nearer to the edge than I like, perhaps, but still relatively smart. Buy low, sell high, know your limits, play to your strengths, pick your fights. Don't buy cars new.

If I'd known how big a hassle the Concord house was going to be, I'm not sure we would've bought it. In Ithaca, the sense of geography is alot smaller than in NH - what they consider the boonies I consider barely out of town. So we were looking at houses a lot of other students and faculty weren't, which cut our competition down quite a bit. As it was, there was a lot less choice now than 4 months ago.

I'll be happier when my medical info (which was due beginning of June) is all in to Cornell and I can be properly registered.
