Title: What John Sees
Summary: the prompt from jo02: I have a fondness for fic where Jack and Ianto are being observed - by accident - by one of the other characters (hopefully Gwen) and learns something positive and new about their relationship. Something nice but not mushy or sentimental

I can't really feel sorry for John, because truth is, he doesn't know Jack at all. He used to know the man Jack once was, at least as far as Jack was willing to let anyone know him, but although Jack looks like him, that person doesn't exist anymore.

John wants to recapture something that's long gone, and that's not going to happen. If he knew what was good for him, he'd grow up and leave well enough alone.

But this is John Hart, I don't think he was ever good at taking good advice, so for his next trick he'll make things even worse and I'm not sure Jack will ever forgive him.

Yeah, I don't really feel sorry for him either. He's such an interesting character to write, though, because the show gives you just enough about him that you have a basis, but you can also be really flexible in how you write him.

He loves a Jack that no longer exists. And maybe that's sad, but the only thing that's sad about it to me is that John never really grew the hell up. Jack did. John is consistently shown to be childish and spiteful. So I think even after seeing Jack happy he would still want to screw it up, if it meant things went his way.

He has no idea what he's getting into.

John Hart is an undisciplined child with no impulse control. A thought pops into his mind and he acts on it without a moment's hesitation. Someone says or does something he doesn't like, he as likely to kill them as anything else. Reflex action. He's all the more dangerous for that because you can't anticipate what he might do.

I've been thinking for a while, how about one with a bit of a twist - Ianto accidentally overhearing Jack talking to one of the others (don't care who) and Ianto gets an insight into how Jack sees their relationship that he didn't have before.
