Dang.
Massive spoilers below the cut.
Biggest downer of a finale since the first season of 24. Just like then, I see there are already articles where the producers are assuring us it wasn't a dream.
Fucking torrent link had a comment that read, "I can't believe they killed her off!". I closed the page before I read who "her" was referring to, but nonetheless my brain couldn't help but do the math. There are three significant female characters on the show: Rita, Deb and Laguerta (No way they'd kill Dexter's young step-daughter). Laguerta is the most expendable but at the same time, killing her off wouldn't carry a whole lot of dramatic weight, so she's safe. Deb is married to Dexter in real life, so as long as they're together, I imagine her job is safe. Which left Rita. Fuck, I was right.
But even if I wasn't sorta-spoiled in advance, the episode laid it on very thick how much Rita meant to Dexter, a clear sign she was doomed. I got the same vibe during the episode where Lundy was killed, giving a bit too much time to how much he and Deb loved each other. All the lovey-dovey exchanges between Batista and Laguerta made me fear for their safety all season.
I'd rank this season above the third but below the first two. The only real filler was the Batista/Laguerta romance subplot, but at least that wasn't nearly as tedious as Quinn's obsessive IA officer from last season. The plotting was a bit sloppy though. I wonder if it was always in the plans for Trinity to be such a bastard to his family or that he actually kills in fours. Both developments kinda came out of left field perhaps because they had nowhere else to go with the character. And the number of times Dexter got this*close to killing Trinity but falling short was almost comical (and in the end, tragically ironic).
So where do they go from here? From the beginning, the show was about Dexter trying to fake a normal life and gradually learning to live one for real (kinda). Rita was the key to that. Now as a single father of three, it looks like he'll have an even harder time satisfying his Dark Passenger. Or do the kids get written off the show? Or are they going to start following the books where Dexter's kids reveal Dark Passengers of their own and Dexter teaches them the Code of Harry? Dexter's been criticized in the past for wrapping up its seasons a little too nice and tidy, but here certainly is what you'd call a game-changer. But I can't imagine to what that would be.
Creepy Thought: Does this open the door for Dexter and Deb to get together? They're not blood-related after all. I mean, if the star of the show wants his wife to have a bigger role... never mind.
