Summary of my replies to reviews for "Return to Romance" Chapter 27
Thanks to everyone who reviewed! I really appreciate it and it was so encouraging to hear from people!
Death Simulation Chamber: I was pretty nervous posting because having a scene take place inside a death simulation chamber is the sort of thing that could topple into ridiculous pretty easily.... but all I could think was: Seto Kaiba would /so/ do this. I figured it was either going to work or fall totally flat. But given the characters involved, this just felt so much more true to me than meeting to talk things out calmly.
I really was trying to make the imagery and symbolism surrounding the events an important part of the chapter. I wanted it to feel that things could go wrong, that they could only survive if their bond was stronger than their doubts and fears and duel monster imagery seemed to be the perfect way to show that. And I could see Kaiba’s fear being that Yami’s presence was just as much an illusion as the monsters, that he’d been abandoned again. Also, I could picture Yami seeing Kaiba rising out of his monsters and finding him beautiful.
Kaiba and Openness: I wanted to put them in a situation, extreme as it was, where they had to show each other how much they cared. I being in that situation that would make it easier for Kaiba to be a little more open.
Yami Sending Additional Cards: I wanted Yami to keep going with the cards, for him to instinctively get that they were getting through to Kaiba.
Isono: One of the scenes I really love in the anime is when Dartz takes control of Kaiba Corporation (and let’s not mention that it’s hard to understand how anyone holding 51% of the shares could lose control) but anyway, Kaiba tells them not to call him Seto-sama, since he’s no longer the CEO. And Isono and Fubeta say that he’ll always be the CEO to them. I always picture Isono being proud of Kaiba, and wanting to watch over him (unobtrusively) in a surrogate family kind of way. Loyalty is an important value to Kaiba, and I like the idea that although he wouldn’t acknowledge it, he appreciates Isono’s.
Note to Flowery: I wanted to say how much I value and appreciate your comments on the quality of my story, especially since the premise isn’t one you want. If the idea of Yami/Atem remaining in Domino isn’t something you’d enjoy reading, avoiding this story is a really good idea!
