Schroeder slumped against the cashier's counter of the Fill-up Mart, resting his elbows on the hard plastic and playing with a losing scratch off Lotto ticket in his hands. He didn't think much of the lottery and thought of ( Read more... )

Family Christmases, while nice at first, soon grew tedious and tense, with the Van Pelt parents finding every small, insignificant thing to disagree on. They were divorced, yes, but they both tried to put up a front of civility for their children, even though Rerun and his siblings were fully grown. While the two would never fight outright, but there was an undercurrent of menace to every conversation they had and they tried to get their children to take sides. Rerun rolled his eyes, grinning at the joke. When Schroeder came around the counter to give him a half-hug, Rerun decided that this would not suffice and proceeded to give Schroeder a bear hug. It was tight, but not too tight, and when he pulled away, he smiled warmly down at his best friend.

"I figured you'd want some company. Besides, it's Christmas. No one should spend Christmas alone." He gave Schroeder another wide smile.

Schroeder stiffened at the bear hug. It wasn't exactly an unheard of move when it came to Rerun, but Schroeder had never been used to physical displays of affection that weren't kept at arm's length.

He stayed in the same position when Rerun pulled away and shrugged. "I'm getting paid." He tilted his head back to the counter. "Come on around here if you want to sit down. There are stools."
