Neo Goth Models Suck

Feb 09, 2008 23:32

How is it that Neo Goth models think that having brown and dishwater blond hair is cool, let alone Goth? How can anyone call call themselves Goth when they look like Britney Spears in PVC?

I feel so sad.

I don't think any one hair colour is any more 'Goth' than any other is it?

But I agree that most Goth models are not at all Goth. Most of them have probably never even heard of Sex Gang Children.

I partially agree with you but not entirely. Here me out; Plain brown, dishwater blond and dog shit brown hair colors are simply NOT Goth. I'm sorry but their not. I'm not saying yo have to have any one specific colour of hair, I'm just saying that when your hair colour is is beyond drab it's to the point of average then it falls outside of the realm of Goth fashion and aesthetic.

Mind you if you have naturally occurring colours such as dark auburn, light blond, black or in the rare case real red hair then I see no reason to change it (unless you want to).

What just frustrates me beyond civility is peoples self proclamation that they are not only a Goth Model, but that their excruciatingly average and mundane Hot Topic aesthetic is somehow "deviant" and "dark" (let alone somehow Goth). When in fact it's average, can be purchased at any mall across the country and can be reproduced by quite literally anyone, at any time.

What do you think?

My hair is dyed a lovely reddish brown at the moment which is ideal for balancing work and social commitments.

I think the thing which concerns me is that when you look back at the first Goth bands there was this darker glam punk aesthetic, which was very different to any sort of post mid-80's goth look.

I hate to agree..... those aren't normally 'goth' hair colors, at all. That being said, my current hair color is it's plain boring natural dark brown, due to just starting careers in a very conservative field. I'm getting too old to the blue-black I did for 8 years after variants of purple and bright burgundy. Crows feet do not look good in combination, so I would need to go with a different haircolor. After I've been there a while I might be able to go with an auburn or something (sigh) Getting old (and having to look 'normalish' in the workplace) sucks.

I would never call myself a neo, having been in the scene to some extent for 20 years, and understand that at times our careers must take precendence over our asthetics. But if you call yourself a MODEL of a certain genre, you darn well should look the part.

For Chrissakes, why didn't the person even do a TEMPORARY spray- in color for the shoot?

I think people who spend too much time obsessing about "what isn't Goth" are probably in a phase.

Dress how you like. Let other people dress how they like. And stop slapping labels on everything.

I'm usually too busy having fun to worry about what other people are wearing. Life's too short to worry about what other people may or may not be doing, especially complete strangers.

Are your delicate sensibilities really so easily offended by the colour of someone's hair? Is it better to be strange or accept strange?

Seriously, who fucking cares? Comments like this have made me re-think my own personal aesthetics. Also, is your issue in this presumably fictitious scenario the cape or the tennis shoes? I really hope it isn't the sneakers (as boring as they may be).

They are models. It's their job to look like whatever they need to look like to get booked. "Goth models" who aren't real goths are particularly stupid because niche modeling gigs are hard to come by and don't pay well. We put out a modeling casting call for our club flyers and I had a blonde, tan, beauty pageant queen try to convince me that she should be the poster girl for our club. That was pretty priceless.

HOWEVER. Getting your panties up in a bunch about any of this? Not worth it. This post is pretty full of wank, and I will pull a Mod Smack if it gets more annoying.

You completely see my point; I'm bitching because I had the same exact experience that you did and it really pissed me off. I was offering to pay real money for some photography work I was doing and the models that showed up was exactly like your beauty queen.

It just drives me insane how our culture has become so watered down that people think that if you can be in "Insta-Goth" by just adding black clothing.

And I hate to admit it, but you're right, it is pretty full of wank. I was just so damn pissed off I didn't think it through, point well taken.
