“Good morning Kazuya-kun,” the elderly woman at the grocery store, which he frequently visits, beamed widely at him.
“You look very happy today,” the woman added and Kazuya smiled back.
“I am.”
Placing the groceries that he had bought into the shopping bag, the woman asked, a little curious about what had made the young man before her look that happy.
“A special day?”
Kazuya nodded his head, “A special day for a special person.”
The woman perked up immediately, eyes sparkling and a gentle smile on her face. “Have a good day with your special person.”
“I will,” he flashed out a shy smile, taking the bag from the woman’s hand and bidded goodbye.
Kazuya looked at the cake in front of him, feeling a little proud of himself. He smiled at the thought of the other’s smile when he looked at the cake that he had baked and decorated himself.
Just as he was about to write the words on the cake, his doorbell rang and his face immediately brightened by the sound of it. Wiping his hands off on his back apron, he quickly made his way to the door and flashed out a bright grin at the person standing at his doorway.
A scoff, “Stop smiling like that.”
Kazuya made a face and ushered the other to enter his apartment, and closed the door behind him.
“You’re late.”
“Sorry, celebration and all,” the other man shrugged, looking uninterested. Kazuya chuckled softly, knowing very much that he was actually interested but acted like he didn’t.
He turned towards the kitchen to continue what he had been doing earlier, whilst from the background, the sounds from the TV filled his living room. Kazuya smiled slightly and once in a while threw glances at his living room when the dark haired man’s laughter resounded loudly, breaking his once silence living room.
“Yo, Kazu! Have you seen this episode? Nakamaru is freaking hilarious.”
His heart skipped a beat at the mention of his band mate.
“I met him today at the celebration…” the man in the living room added and before he could reply anything, the man added again, “And Jin looked good…”
Kazuya’s hand froze and his heart beat increased in pace. “Oh… really?” he asked back.
“Yeah, and happy too.”
Kazuya smiled to himself, but somehow feeling a little ache in his chest. “Good then.”
Yeah, he was happy to hear that Jin was happy and had moved on from their relationship, he nodded his head slightly murmuring, “Yeah, I am happy…”
But why did his heart ache so much?
“Happy birthday to you~ Happy birthday to you~”
Kazuya clapped his hands happily, whilst the other man, who was sitting at the other end of the table, just rolled his eyes.
“I don’t know why I am doing this with you,” the dark haired man muttered under his breath and Kazuya grinned, ruffling the other’s hair.
“Because Atsushi likes me!” he teased and the man groaned, swatting his hand away.
“I do not like you.”
“Yes you do, because you’re here.”
Atsushi smiled slightly and Kazuya couldn’t help but to smile too. The other man looked very nice when he smiled but too bad Atsushi liked brooding more.
‘It’s my image,’ he had told him, during the first time they accidentally met here in Okinawa.
“You have a nice smile.”
“I know, that’s why I’m smiling at you,” the man in front of him said nonchalantly and Kazuya smiled at the remark when Atsushi said, “You have a nice smile too… and you know that I like it when you smile.”
Kazuya chuckled at the compliment and Atsushi made a face. Before, he never expected that the frank Atsushi could be this sweet and sometimes sappy. He remembered the time when he listened to Atsushi and his band’s live gig. He had cried listening to the song and fell in love immediately with the other man’s voice.
“Is this okay?”
Atsushi suddenly asked and he knew what the other had meant, but he chose to ignore it and tried to change the subject.
“Let’s eat the cake now, shall we?”
“I’m asking you, is this okay?”
Kazuya bit his lower lip and smiled. “It’s okay because you’re here.”
And he flashed a big smile towards the other, “Let’s just enjoy the moment okay?”
He could feel warm hands pressing atop of his, squeezing them lightly. He smiled at the gesture and mouthed out a ‘thank you’. Atsushi sighed then looked at the cake on the table curiously.
“Is it edible?”
“Of course it is.”
Atsushi laughed, poking at his cheek. “You’re an old man already. Didn’t anyone tell you puffing your cheeks like that isn’t cute anymore?”
“Shut up!” Kazuya grinned, feeling a little happy. It had been long since he felt this lighthearted and he wished that he could feel this way till the end.
The room was quiet as Kazuya stared at the half-eaten cake on the table in the kitchen. It had always been like this… even though how happy or how he acted happy during the day, still, during the nights… when all the memories rushed in, Kazuya could feel his heart breaking.
His heart continued to break though he had tried so hard to mend it back and he knew that he wasn’t being fair towards Atsushi, giving all those fake smiles but somehow he knew amidst the lies, he really felt genuinely happy when the other was around.
Kazuya took a glance at the clock on his wall, reading the date shown, then placed a lighted candle on the cake. Clearing his throat,
“Happy birthday to you~ Happy birthday to Jin~ Happy birthday to you…” Kazuya could feel a tear roll down his cheek as his voice came out barely a whisper, blowing out the candle.
“Why are you crying?”
Kazuya glanced up and smiled at the image in front of him.
“I really missed you…”
“So why aren’t you coming home?”
“I’m scared…”
The image in front of him frowned cutely.
“What are you scared of?”
“Of you… moving on…” Kazuya replied softly and he felt bad about it.
He was the one who left and wanted the other to move on, but he knew that he couldn’t stand it. Watching the person that you love so dearly loving other people other than yourself… he knew he couldn’t do it.
“But I’m just doing what you wanted me to do… move on…”
“And I wouldn’t see you anymore…” he whispered and the image in front of him vanished into thin air.
“And I couldn’t see you anymore…” he whispered again.
Tbc
Now… what can I do?
You’ve probably moved on…
Us… what can we do now?
The door of longing opens
And the memories of you
Are coming after me…
Again and again…
The corners of my eyes go red
Now… what can I do?
The door of longing opens
And the memories of you
Are coming after me…
Just again and again…
My heart gets broken
Now… what can I do?
