I hope Im not the only one who thinks this...I really do...
I watched a movie called "The Eagle Has Landed"...I'm not sure if many of you who read this have heard of it but my parents raved about it and all...so I thought, ok I'll watch it...half to get them off my back but also because I was intrigued...has a great cast, and it seemed rather interesting...
Now, from here on, whatever I say is my own opinion, and I may add a few spoilers in...so if you want to watch the movie then dont read any more...so...you have been warned...
To be quite honest...I believe movies are there to make you feel good...some do it via comedy, some do it by heart warming stories...hell, some even do it by people just making it out alive...but as long as I feel good after a movie, its good enough for me...(in most cases...obviously there are just some really lame movies...)...so when I see a movie that doesnt make me feel good afterwards, I tend to not like it...and I think thats fair enough...
Now, maybe I tend to think about movies in a way thats just a bit too shallow compared to other people...and by that I mean I dont grasp alot of hidden meaning and stuff particularly well the first time through...but I think I know when a good movie is a good movie...and that doesnt mean telling a story makes a good movie...now, in this case, I can see that the time that this movie was made had a major influence on the result of the story, but when the people you connect with end up with less than they started with, it really doesnt make for a good movie...basically, these Germans are sent in to capture Winston Chirchill near the end of WW2...but its told from the POV of the Germans...so you tend to connect with them...but they all end up dying and had some other stuff go wrong as well...basically, they lost imo...my parents seem to think they didnt, but they did...either way you look at it...nothing they did was successful and never looked like it from the start...
Now, if you want to tell a story about people losing, go make a doco on people in Africa or something...If you're gunna make a movie, make it with winners...There are tons of movies where the bad guys win but you dont give a shit because you connect with them and hope they do win...but it really shits me when you feel for a person and you hope they get it right, and everything, and they ultimately end up with nothing...
Good story or not, sad endings just dont work for me...
Now, why am I going on like this? Because my parents spent half an hour trying to convince me that I was wrong...they said how they died honorably...fuck that...they got nothing out of it...however you dress it up, they got nothing...and they got screwed over...and thats why it was such a shithouse ending...dont get me wrong, the cast was great and there was some good action scenes...but that doesnt make a movie, especially if the movie relies so heavily on the story...
So, my parents start trying to compare it with similar movies that I like...all of which ended properly...and what really pisses me off is that they didnt give what I thought any credibility...these are my parents for god's sake...people I thought would respect my opinion and not try to change it...I'm not saying I reject their point of view...they like the movie, and I'll give them that...but when they start trying to convince me that I'm wrong in my opinion about a movie...well, you can imagine that I started getting a bit hot under the collar...
Actually, I've been getting a few hints lately that they dont like my taste in movies overall...Now, granted, I'm not the biggest fan of alot of the movies they watch...and I know they may not like the movies I like...but to say to my face that I should "broaden my horizons" when it comes to movies, then I think I have a right to complain...they are always trying to get me to watch movies that I've either never heard of or wouldnt give a second look to...but I never ask them to watch a movie I think they wouldnt like...and if I do, it's only jokingly because I know they dont like it...if they are so eager to "broaden horizons" then why dont they watch Advent Children, or Austin Powers or Dude where's my car or something? Because "they dont interest" them...well some of your movies might now interest me...
Ok, sorry...I got a bit carried away there...this is quite long already...but I hope some of you realise how I feel about this...
