Jamaica, man... I hope that one day I'll be able to go there. All Inclusive resorts, if you hope to get a taste of the REAL culture, are horrible. Cancun, where I went for Christmas, was worse than just an all-inclusive stretch of hotels, but it was almost America-lite, in the way that it wasn't Mexico in the least. It was a place for rich Americans and Brits to go and unwind. Same mentality as the US, the whole standoff-ish guests, and the super-friendly staff, (my older brother being among those). The way they take advantage of the staff is horrific, then they don't even give them any perks. My bro loved it though, his boss was an amazing lady, and he seemed happier than he'd been in years. THe only real way to see a country is by meeting people who live there. The only problem is finding those people to meet.
You should go to Jamaica sometime, because it really is an awesome place. There, at least, it was relatively easy to find people to meet. All i had to do was simply walk down the side of the main road... i wasn't even in a town or anything, but there were always people everywhere. It became almost inconvenient, because literally everyone i passed called me over to talk. Many people wanted to sell me things, but when I told them I wasnt interested in buying anything, they were cool with that. Then we just talked, and everyone was curious about my life and what it is like in america, so it was easy to start conversations. Anyways, my man... RESPEK!
I think that is the coolest thing ever that you went off on your own and saw Jamaica that way. That would be so fun. You should teach me how to travel haha.
Wow Dan. That's so deep. I really commend you for doing what you do, you are a very brave person. I am cursed with a horrible sense of direction and therefore could never venture off without some sense of how to find my way home or without someone who knew their way better than I did. That is so cool that you did something so independent like that. I feel shitty now thinking of my vacation which consisted mostly of work and lounging around my house, but I need the money for the trip to Germany and for college stuff. Anyway, reading your entry was really nice, it was well written and it made me wish that I could do something like that- go somewhere strange and just wander. Sometimes in the summer I have urges to leave my bed and walk to robbins to watch the sunrise by myself. I've been there before at sunrise but never alone. And even venturing over to robins isnt like venturing into the streets of jamaica. But at least it's a step for me. That story about the girl was beautiful. It's amazing when you meet someone who you click so well

Too bad vacation is over. Y'know, here in Arlington, I even have a lot of trouble motivating myself to go out and do things like watching a sunrise at robbins alone, for some reason. But it is okay that you didn't do so much this vacation. Ill bet it was good just to have a break from school, and to make some money. I also need money, for a year's worth of travel, and i definitely didnt make any last week.
I guess it is better that I met that girl, even if for only an hour, than never having had that experience at all. It really was unbelievable. We talked for exactly one hour, and that was it, like that, it was gone. It sounds almost like a cliche, except that I never imagined that things like that actually happened to people.
I was waiting for the part of your entry where you were going to talk about those whom you spoke to. I can't imagine staying in that sort of resort--where the atmosphere is simply America Lite!--for an extended period of time without speaking to those who live in the real Jamaica. You did it

That story about the homeless people in Harvard Square is awesome. I have never done that, though I always wanted to. I wonder why I didn't... it would be such a simple thing to do, really. You just need to listen and be open-minded, and you can learn an enormous amount.
Love is a very strange thing. It seems to get in the way of everything, yet what could be more important?
