So let me tell you a story. You see, when I left america I only bought one plug adaptor yet took both my laptop and my shitty external hard drive that requires its own plug-in. So I was doing this dance of switching the adaptor between them. I got a replacement power supply for my laptop at one point because I was having(still am...) problems ( Read more... )

Is the drive broken? Can you get a new power supply and it will work again?

No, it looks like I fried some component of the external hard drive itself. The power supply seems to work fine, but the hard drive won't start up.

I didn't hear anything like grinding or something like that, it was all very quiet, yet it was not in proportion to my breaking it.

It's hard to say whether you fried the drive itself, or just the external enclosure. Easiest way to test would be to remove the drive from the enclosure and try plugging it into a desktop PC somewhere.
