Sympathy for the monsters

Oct 31, 2008 14:36

Well, it's Halloween again! That wonderful controversial holiday, celebrated in so many different ways and interpreted in even more. Some like it, some don't, but I'm not here today to talk about that. Instead, I'd like to discuss one of the things generally celebrated around Halloween -- monsters.

Haven't any of you ever felt bad for the monster when it dies? )

Hi, Mikey.

I know zombies can't help it.

Really, though, you've brought up a good point. (Yay for a thoughtful Halloween post!)

The zombies, vampires, ghosts, werewolves, and assorted other monsters don't have to die/go away/be contained because they've made bad decisions and deserve punishment (since they're often following instincts, unable to make decisions at all, or may not realize they're doing harmful acts ... they have to die/go away/be contained to protect those who are alive.

In real life, we jail those who choose to hurt people but lock up the criminally insane in asylums -- it doesn't stop them from locking the person up, just makes a difference where they cage the person who hurts others to stop him/her from hurting others in the future.
