gradient hair

i want to dye my hair a purple to red gradient (purple at the roots, red at the tips). does anyone have any advice on how i could do it?

What I do to get this (current hair)

oh yeah I forgot to mention! Use Special FX hair dye. It does this running blending gradient thing better than other dyes do.

aww thanks yeah i tried that on my bangs doing a red to purple gradient... but the red got darkened quite a bit by the purple... so i'm guessing i should probably do more of whichever is the lightest color :3
